SHELLAC – KNOT SEALER Contents: Ethanol and shellac flakes. Used for: Applied to knots and resin pockets before the base paint coat is applied. Consumption: 1 litre covers around 20 m2. Drying time: 20 minutes. Kulturhantverkarna’s Shellac is made in the traditional way, using ethanol and scale insect extract. Its very high level of shellac flakes means that it is often enough to apply one coat to knots and resin pockets. The shellac is intended to sit under Kulturhantverkarna’s linseed oil paint and Emulsion paints, but can also be used under conventional paint types such as alkyds and acrylates. Shellac is only resin of animal origin and therefore enjoys some special characteristics not found in natural resin from vegetable kingdom. For thousands of years India is aware of this natures unique gift to man. Shellac is only used indoors. Apply a coat of shellac to each knot or resin pocket. Use a small, simple brush and make sure not to create “banks” of shellac against the untreated wood. After around 20 minutes the surface is dry and can be painted over. Test a small part of the surface and evaluate the result. The brush should be cleaned immediately (shellac dries very quickly) by dipping and stirring in methylated spirits before washing with soap and water.
